This page on Sky Italia makes Gomorra look like just another crime series. Looks can be deceptive.
It is, for my money, second only to The Wire for sheer brilliance. It is said TV is the new cinema. Gomorra is the only series that can lay any serious claim to being cinematic. And to that, I would even add Shakespearean in scope.
As with cinema, to make genuinely great TV every aspect of the collaborative process has to hit the same high mark. The writing, performing, direction, cinematography, sets, locations, wardrobe (on and on…) all come together to create something truly greater than the sum of their parts.
To describe it as a drama about the organised crime world of the Camorra in Naples would be true but a bit like saying The Godfather is just about the Mafia.
